Dunedin Weekly SS Competition

Secondary School rugby in Otago including the formulating and preparation of all weekly draws is organised by the Otago Rugby Football Union in conjunction with the Otago Secondary Schools Rugby Council. The OSSRC meets around six times a year, normally on a Friday afternoon at Carisbrook. A programme of events including a draft draw for all grades is circulated before the season begins. If for some reason a scheduled game is unable to be played, please make sure the ORFU is informed at the very least, 24 hours beforehand. The contact person at ORFU for all Secondary Rugby inquiries including the various competition draws, player registrations, player dispensations and all referee related matters is: Dick Haigh, phone 03 466 4005 (Direct) or 021 377 201, email dick.haigh@orfu.co.nz.

Under 18 grade: 3 Divisions with fully structured draws, semi finals and finals.

Under 16, Under 15, Under 14 grades: No formal flag points competition. Team strengths, travel requirements and the number of country based teams are important considerations factored into the draws. This may result in teams of similar ability playing each other 2 or 3 times during the season while teams of considerable differing ability may not play each other at all to avoid "miss matches".

The Under 18 draw is published for a full round, allowing transport and other arrangements to be made in advance. It is important that special requests in all competition grades be made prefereably, prior to the start of the season. Schools need to take into consideration inter-school fixtures that could double as competition games, camps, school formals, productions and other related activities. We will do our best to accommodate these.

Playing Times

Under 18 grades usually play at 1pm in all regions. Under 14, Under 15 and Under 16 teams normally play at 11.15am in Dunedin but if an age grade team travels with a senior team it would play at the same time (1pm). Outside these times, there is flexibility to cater for special requests. In Central Otago due to frosts and travel, 1pm is the normal start time for all grades.

Competition Format 2006

Under 18 (to be confirmed subject to final team entries):

  1. A split first round with teams competing in 2 "Town/Coastal" and 1 "Country" sections. These games assist to determine team strengths for Otago-wide Round 2.
  2. For the Championship Otago wide round, the Premier Division will consist of the top finishing 5 or 6 Town teams and the top finishing 2 or 3 Country teams. The other 2 Divisions will consist of a mix of Town & Country teams based on team strengths.

Under 16, Under 15, Under 14:

Teams will be split into "Town/Coastal" and "Country" sections for initial rounds, then placed according to team strengths and location for a managed second round draw.

Length of Season

2006 dates - Commences 6th May, first (split) round concludes 3 June. Otago-wide 2nd round commences 10; U18 round concludes 5 August with semi finals 12th August & Finals 19th August. Other grades finish 26 August for those teams wishing to continue. Note: Games will be scheduled for 3 June, (Queens Birthday) and 1 July (term ends 30 June). No games 8th & 15th July.

Fixture Duration Times

Under 14 & Under 15 usually play 30 minute halves,  Under 16 & Under 18 usually play 35 minute halves.

Costs

No team entry fee is charged by the ORFU. All travel costs are the responsibility of individual schools or clubs. The ORFU has indicated it will pay a subsidy to teams playing in the senior and junior grades that involve travel to areas outside their normal playing area. The level of subsidies for senior and junior grades will be determined largely by the amount of any sponsorship negotiated, and paid out at the conclusion of the season.

Draw

The draws for the age grades are completed at least ten days in advance so any requests or applicable information need to be advised before then. This can include say Dunedin teams wishing to travel to country areas for games. It is possible to play games under lights at some venues, so Friday nights may also be an option. The competition round robin draws will be emailed in advance. The confirmed weekly draws will be emailed to schools and clubs by each Friday for the following Saturday week. The ORFU also has the draw published in each Thursday's Otago Daily Times Sports Draw. These draws will also be available on the internet at the ORFU Website. Games involving Central & Southern regional teams are published in the Sports Draws of The Southland Times, Clutha Leader, and The Central Otago News.

Default Policy

  1. Where a team defaults to another, maximum points (Under 18) shall be awarded to the team who received the default.
  2. Any school or club defaulting a fixture must advise the following no later than 12 noon on the day preceding the scheduled fixture:
    (i) Opposition school (teacher in charge of rugby or club coach/captain).
(ii) Dick Haigh at Otago Rugby who will advise referee.

Inter-Schools - All Grades

These need to be advised to the ORFU (Dick Haigh) at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date. These games will then be included in the official ORFU weekly draw and referees will be appointed.

Player Registration Forms

All players must complete a NZRU Player Registration Form prior to the season commencing. ORFU will distribute these with appropriate instructions.

Junior Events

A SI Junior Rugby Tournament for co-ed schools is played each year in Winter Tournament week. About five weeks before the tournament, confirmation in the form of $300, which includes a $200 bond, is required. Players are mostly juniors although some Year 10 students qualify as they could be under 15 as at the 1st January at the start of the year.

This tournament has around 50% of flag points in pool games earned by scoring tries. Games are 20min each way and all teams normally get at least five in three days. Other tournaments, known as Under 15 tournaments, are not sanctioned by the NZSSSC as they have restricted entry.

2006 SI SS Junior tournament - Mosgiel 14-18 August.
