OSSSA
In 1998 the Otago Secondary School Sports Association
Incorporated (OSSSA) was established to formalise many of the aspects
that had grown with the position and its responsibilities. This
Association acts as the Management Committee of the Otago Regional
Sports Director. The Management Committee is made up of four Principals
and four Heads of Sport.
Regional Sports Director
The Otago Regional Sports Director's position was
started in 1993. There are 25 regional sports directors in 19 regions
throughout the country.
The Regional Sports Directors make up the Management
Committee of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council (NZSSSC).
The Board of this Council is made up of nine Principals, one Regional
Sports Director and Peter Sharp, the Executive Director.
In brief, the director is involved in organising sports
previously completed by teachers. This allows teachers to concentrate
on organising sport within their own school. The director is the
contact person for schools and regional sports organisations seeking
more information. All information is circulated to the 23 contributing
schools on a regular basis by mail, email and fax. These include entry
forms to provincial, regional. South Island and National tournaments
plus information received from a wide range of groups with a sporting
interest. Advice is given to outside organisations on how best to work
with schools. The director will offer to help Regional Sports
Organisations in organising South Island or National secondary school
events allocated to Otago, which have been sanctioned by the NZSSSC.
The director will offer to help in the organising of regional and
provincial secondary school events that are being held in Otago. The
director will offer to help in draws and the organisation of weekly
competitions. The director will be responsible for SPARC's Sportfit
programme.
In Dunedin the director is responsible for a number of
weekly competitions:
Summer
Friday - Waterpolo
Winter
Wednesday - Soccer (boys), and Ice-Hockey
Currently three to four half day visits are made each
year
to each of the eleven country schools where coaches work with students.
